Community Forum at the Conley-Guerrero Activity Center People from across the Austin area will gather Saturday, October 18, from 1pm-5pm at a Community Forum at the Conley-Guerrero Activity Center (808 Nile St.) to take stock of the damage that NAFTA and similar free trade policies have done to workers, the environment and our communities. Leaders from labor, environmental, faith, and student groups will call on elected officials and candidates for office to support a fair trade agenda.

The Forum will highlight the deep concern that people across the region have about NAFTA and its negative impacts on jobs, on water rights, and on transportation. More than 5,000 jobs in Austin have been lost directly due to free trade.

“When trade agreements allow companies to pay workers in Mexico , Honduras , or India desperately low wages while skimping on safety equipment in factories that freely pollute the environment, then it is no wonder that workers in Austin are going to lose out,” said Polly Monear of Ten Thousand Villages. “The solution must be to make sure that workers, wherever they are, can receive decent wages, good working conditions, and the right to form a union.”

Community leaders will call on area Congress Members to co-sponsor the TRADE Act, legislation now in Congress that calls for renegotiating NAFTA and other trade deals and that lays out the changes needed to make them fair for workers and the environment.

"It is time for Rep. Lloyd Doggett to show real support for us on trade issues and be a leader for economic and environmental justice," said Carmen Llanes of PODER. "Considering his record in speaking out for the people, it is a surprise to many of us in the community that he has not yet signed on to the TRADE Act."

With an election around the corner, Forum participants will also be sending a message to candidates.

“Where I live water issues are paramount, and the fact that NAFTA and CAFTA let multinational corporations come in and turn our water into a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder is outrageous,” said Sheril Smith, a volunteer with the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club. “At an event last week, Larry Joe Doherty made clear he thought water was not a commodity but a human right. Rep. Mike McCaul, do you agree?”

The Forum, entitled “Fighting for a Fair Trade Future”, will include a panel discussion on the TRADE Act and workshops on water rights; food, farming, and trade; the Trans-Texas Corridor; the sweatfree movement; fair trade artisans in India and Nepal; and local worker rights. The keynote speech will be given by Carmencita “Chie” Abad, a former sweatshop worker from Saipan who was instrumental in forcing 26 major retailers to settle a lawsuit in September 2002 to improve factory working conditions.

The Forum is sponsored by the Texas Fair Trade Coalition, Oxfam UT , Ten Thousand Villages, PODER, Education Austin, AFSC - Austin, Green Party of Travis County, and ILASSA.

Austin Council Member Mike Martinez, former Mayor Gus Garcia and members of the Austin Police Department announced today the details of the City’s inaugural “Dia de la Raza” parade.
The “Dia de la Raza” parade will take place Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009. “Austin Hispanics can be described in many ways,” said Council Member Mike Martinez. “We are proud and we love our community. We also enjoy sharing with others the traditions that make us who we are. It’s in that spirit that the idea for a community-wide celebration was born.”
Dia de la Raza is a holiday that is celebrated on October 12th every year and it celebrates modern Hispanic Heritage. Though it is a celebration of Hispanic culture, it is something everyone in the Austin community can participate in.
“In celebrating Dia de la Raza, we are honoring both the European heritage and the Indigenous heritage of all Latin American people, and the rich culture that their mixing produced,” said former Mayor Gus Garcia.
The parade will be designed to highlight the rich Hispanic culture in the Austin community and will feature floats, bands and numerous Latino community groups.

Elections for Govenor

Let us ask ourselves what changes and corruption has occured? Has any? What shameful governments have led us to be sold down the river?

Racial Profiling-Dehumanization of our society

Racial Profiling can only dehumanize our society. It is a witch hunt when our government allows communities to hunt those south of the border. Let us progress towards a more civilized society. Let us keep our faith in God, and not in Fear. Fear whether, it be our own or instilled by a corrupt and disfunctional beuracacy.

Democracy and our rights

Democracy, Free to be all we can be
Free to Dream, Let us Dream while we are awake
and not die in sleep while we Dream
